Goldendoodle vs Labradoodle in India

Goldendoodles are generally calmer and easier for first-time Indian owners; Labradoodles are more energetic and more demanding of exercise. Both need serious grooming, both suit families, and neither is truly hypoallergenic. In India the Goldendoodle is far more consistently bred, which matters more than any difference between the breeds themselves.

Written by the Puppy Hub team — breeders of Standard Poodles, Parti Poodles, Toy Poodles and Goldendoodles in Delhi NCR for close to a decade, placing puppies with families across India.

These are the two doodles Indian buyers confuse most, and the comparisons online are almost all written for American homes. Here is how the difference actually plays out in a flat in Mumbai or a builder floor in Gurgaon.

The short answer

Goldendoodle Labradoodle
Parent breeds Golden Retriever × Poodle Labrador Retriever × Poodle
Energy level High, but settles indoors Higher, and slower to settle
Daily exercise 60–75 min 75–90 min
Temperament Softer, more people-focused Bolder, more boisterous
Adult weight 20–30 kg 22–32 kg
Coat Usually wavy, sometimes curly More variable — wool, fleece or hair
Grooming Every 6–8 weeks Every 6–8 weeks
First-time owners Usually the easier choice Manageable, but more work early on
Availability in India Reasonably available Much less consistently bred

Temperament: where the difference actually shows

Both crosses use the same Poodle side, so the difference comes almost entirely from the retriever parent, and those two retrievers are not the same dog.

The Golden Retriever is soft, sensitive and intensely people-focused. It reads a room. A Goldendoodle tends to follow you between rooms, wants to be touching someone, and takes correction gently — sometimes too gently, going flat if you are sharp with it.

The Labrador is bold, food-driven and physically confident. A Labradoodle is more likely to bounce, to test what it can get away with, and to keep going when a Goldendoodle would have settled. It is also, often, quicker to learn.

Neither is better. But between six months and two years, the Labradoodle is noticeably more dog to manage, and that is exactly the period when families in flats start to struggle.

Which suits an Indian home better?

Honestly, in most Indian situations we would point you at the Goldendoodle, for three practical reasons.

  1. Flat living. Both need real exercise, but the Goldendoodle switches off indoors more readily. A Labradoodle that has not had enough exercise does not sit quietly — it finds something to do, and in a 2BHK you will notice.
  2. Working households. Neither should be alone nine hours a day. But the Labradoodle handles under-stimulation worse, and destructive behaviour follows faster.
  3. Consistency of breeding in India. This is the biggest factor and it has nothing to do with the breeds themselves. There are many more Goldendoodle litters bred here, from more established lines. Labradoodles in India are bred far more sporadically, which means more variation in size, coat and temperament, and more sellers who cannot tell you what the grandparents were.

If you have a house, a garden, an active family and someone home during the day, a Labradoodle is a superb dog. In a metro flat with two working adults, the Goldendoodle is the safer match.

Coat and grooming: the part that decides most rehomings

Neither dog is low-maintenance, and this is where owners of both breeds get caught out in India.

Goldendoodle coats are usually wavy, sometimes curly, and fairly predictable within a well-bred litter.

Labradoodle coats vary more — wool (tight curl, least shedding, most grooming), fleece (soft wave, the most sought after) and hair (straighter, sheds more, closest to a Labrador). Two puppies in the same litter can end up needing quite different care.

Either way: professional grooming every six to eight weeks for life, at roughly ₹1,500–₹3,000 a session in Delhi NCR, plus combing at home three times a week with a metal comb. A coat left two months mats to the skin and has to be shaved off under sedation. If that commitment is not realistic, neither breed is right, and a Toy Poodle or a smooth-coated breed would serve you better.

Shedding and allergies: the claim to be careful about

Both are sold in India as “non-shedding” and “hypoallergenic”. Neither claim is fully true.

Both shed far less than a Golden Retriever or a Labrador, which is why allergy sufferers often manage well with them. But coat type varies within a litter, an F1 sheds more than an F1B, and allergic reactions differ from person to person. Anyone guaranteeing a non-shedding puppy is guessing or selling.

The honest approach: if allergies are the reason you are buying, spend an hour with an adult dog of the coat type you are considering before you commit.

Indian heat and monsoon

Neither breed has an advantage here. Both are large, coated dogs in a country with a brutal summer, and both need the same handling.

  • Summer: a short even clip, never a shave to the skin. Walks before 8am and after sunset. Constant water and shade. Watch for heavy panting and drooling.
  • Monsoon: dry the coat completely after every wet walk, especially ears and between paw pads. This is where fungal and ear infections start.
  • North Indian winter: both are comfortable. Let the coat grow slightly longer.

Cost in India

Our Goldendoodle puppies are ₹75,000 to ₹1,20,000 depending on quality and lineage, with the price set by generation, coat, parentage and papers.

Labradoodle pricing in India is much less consistent, precisely because the breeding is less consistent. A wide quoted range is a signal to check the breeder more carefully, not a bargain. With either breed, ask the same questions: can I meet the mother, what were the grandparents, what health testing was done, and what happens if a vet finds a problem in the first week.

Running costs are effectively identical — roughly ₹5,500 to ₹12,000 a month for food, grooming, preventatives and routine vet care.

So which should you choose?

Choose a Goldendoodle if you live in a flat, you are a first-time owner, there are young children at home, you want a softer and more biddable dog, or you want to buy from a breeder whose lines you can actually verify in India.

Choose a Labradoodle if you have space and an active household, someone is home during the day, you want a higher-drive dog for training or sport, and you have found a breeder who can show you the parents and answer for the line.

Choose neither if nobody is home during the day, or if grooming every six to eight weeks for the next fourteen years is not something you will actually do. In that case look at a Toy Poodle, which is far less demanding on both counts.

Common questions

Which is calmer, a Goldendoodle or a Labradoodle?

The Goldendoodle, generally. Golden Retrievers are softer and more people-focused than Labradors, and that carries through. Labradoodles are typically more energetic and more boisterous, especially in the first two years.

Which is better for an Indian apartment?

A Goldendoodle, in most cases. Both need real daily exercise, but the Labradoodle’s higher energy is harder to satisfy in a flat, and the difference shows most between six months and two years.

Do Goldendoodles and Labradoodles shed?

Both shed far less than their retriever parent, but neither is guaranteed non-shedding. Coat type varies within a litter. F1B puppies of either cross have curlier coats that shed least and need the most grooming.

Which handles Indian heat better?

Neither has a real advantage. Both are large, coated dogs that need shade, water, early-morning and evening walks, and a correct summer clip rather than a shave.

Which is easier to train?

Both are highly trainable. Labradoodles tend to be faster and more driven; Goldendoodles tend to be gentler and more eager to please. For a first-time owner the Goldendoodle is usually more forgiving.

Which is more available in India?

Goldendoodles. There are considerably more Goldendoodle litters bred in India than Labradoodle litters, so Labradoodle pricing and quality vary much more widely and are harder to verify.

How much do they cost in India?

Our Goldendoodle puppies are ₹75,000 to ₹1,20,000 depending on quality and lineage. Labradoodles are bred far less consistently in India, so quoted prices vary widely — which makes checking the breeder more important than comparing the price.

Which lives longer?

Both typically live 12 to 15 years. Neither has a meaningful advantage.

Which is better with young children?

Both are good, and the Goldendoodle has a slight edge on patience. The practical difference is size and enthusiasm — a bouncy young Labradoodle can knock over a small child without meaning any harm.

Should I choose based on coat colour?

No. Colour tells you nothing about temperament, health or how the dog will fit your home. Choose on energy level, grooming commitment and the breeder you trust.
